National Epidemic - Gambling addiction is often considered a national epidemic in many countries, including the United States. It affects a significant portion of the population, leading to a variety of negative consequences for individuals, families, and communities. According to the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG), it is estimated that 2-3% of the U.S. adult population (over 2.5 million) experiences some form of gambling problem, and approximately 1% may meet the criteria for gambling disorder, which is a more severe form of addiction. These numbers are most likely much higher, given the recent easy access to gambling.
The rapid expansion of online gambling, sports betting, and casino accessibility, especially with the legalization of gambling in various states, has only exacerbated the problem. Gambling addiction can lead to financial ruin, relationship breakdowns, mental health issues, and in extreme cases, suicide. The stigma surrounding gambling addiction, combined with the relatively low public awareness compared to other addictions, often makes it harder for people to seek help.
